Gluten Free Eating In Auckland
Every time my partner and I want to go out to eat, whether its for a Saturday brunch or a weekday dinner, we find it so frustrating to find places that provide gluten free options! I often find myself sifting through Google for AGES trying to find somewhere to go. So, I have compiled a list of places (by suburb) that cater for gluten free. I’m regularly adding to this page when I find a new one, so check back regularly for updates 🙂
Miss Clawdy’s – Wynyard Quarter – down by the fish market. Many items on the menu are gluten free and interesting and healthy! Was a nice surprise to stumble upon this place. Have now been there for lunch and for dinner and enjoyed it both times. My favourite was the baby beetroot, quinoa, chargrilled zucchini, goat’s curd and pumpkin seeds and the gluten free apple crumble with spiced egg nog custard for dessert. For some reason they don’t have their full menu online but here is a sample menu:
Grouchos Cafe – 1/143 Wellesley Street, Auckland City. Everything on the menu is gluten free! (With glutenous options available for those who might be dining with you and are not gluten free).
Sheinken Cafe – 3 Lorne Street, Auckland City.
Revive Cafe – 24 Wyndym Street or 33 Lorne Street, Auckland City. – Everything is Vegetarian and half the menu is Gluten Free. They have a fantastic range of salads, frittatta’s, wraps, curries, hot pots, bliss balls etc. I absolutely LOVE this place and go there for lunch anytime I’m in the city. The only unfortunate thing is they’re not open on the weekend !!
Mexico – Britomart Place. I LOVE THIS PLACE. The food is amazing and while it is Tapas style so you need to order several things it is truly scrummy! It is a fairly small restaurant tho so if your looking for somewhere to eat and talk intimately this is not the place 🙂 (Below is a picture of the pumpkin taco). You can check out their menu here:
Knuckle Sandwich -280 Queen St, Auckland Central. a similar concept to Subway – yet they make gluten free sandwiches. The bread is your regular gluten free bread like you buy at the supermarket. They make huge sandwiches (3 slices of bread) and you choose the fillings, salad and sauces – I asked for mine to be toasted (as most gluten free bread needs to be).
Fatimas – 240 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby. Ph: 0800fatimas. They do GREAT pita/kebabs with really yummy filling options. Only an extra $2 for gluten free pita. They also state on their website that they no longer use peanuts in any of their cooking.
Little Bird – 1a Summer st Ponsonby Or 385, New North Road, Kingsland. Amazing Raw food (sweet and savoury). The Ponsonby one is the best as its bigger and has a full menu! You might have to wait a little (there’s always people there, its that good) but its worth it! Yummy yummy food that’s SO good for you! Below is a gorgeous salad and Mini Blueberry Cheesecakes. These are just a few of the amazing things you can have to eat at Little Bird. Please note the Kingsland branch is the smallest and is shut on a Monday (Iv’e learnt this the hard way 🙂
Kokako – Grey Lynn – A really awesome range of gluten free options on their menu (interesting, yummy, healthy and not your standard boring cafe options – just because we are gluten free doesn’t mean we only want to have one option!). They do amazing Coconut Quinoa pancakes with Creme Fraiche, toasted pistachio nuts and maple syrup! And also organic soft brew coffee which is specially brewed slowly for 8 hours and contains 70% less acidity than normal coffee. Tastes amazing too with floral, fruity and earthy notes with hints of cacao! Check out their menu here :
Iguacu Bar and Restaurant -269 Parnell Road, Parnell, Auckland
WISE CICADA – Newmarket ( It’s in Capitals because this place is amazing! Everything is vegetarian and they have many gluten free salads, hot meals and other options available, not to mention the DIVINE gluten free sweet treats!!
Zarbo Delicatessen & Cafe – 24 Morrow St Newmarket
Otto Woo – Ponsonby and Newmarket – they are clued up on gluten free making it easy to order.
Zest Organic Store and Cafe – I was pleasantly surprised to find this little place on the main road as it had a cabinet with a selection of tasty organic morsels, GLUTEN FREE sausage rolls (vegan) that were the best I’ve tasted yet! And a flourless chocolate cake and Gluten free blueberry cheesecake to top it off! J They also had raw veggie wraps, bliss balls, and raw peanut chocolate along with a selection of smoothies, juices and freshly churned organic BLUEBERRY FROZEN YOGHURT! (Available in strawberry too). Will definitely be back to try the blueberry frozen yoghurt next time! So when you pop over to Devonport next I suggest you check this little place out 🙂 Photos below are from Zest.
Sal Rose – Mt Albert. Does Gluten free Pizzas and Pasta (as well as normal for those dining that are not gluten free)
Pappas Pizza – Sandringham
The Blue Bird Vegetarian Cafe – 299 Dominion Road – Excellent menu, so many tasty options for gluten free and super healthy while you’re at it. They are open every day except Sunday. Check out their menu here http://www.thebluebird.co.nz/menu.html
Ethos Cafe, within Huckleberry Organics, New Lynn – They have an amazing selection of gluten free food (not just salads, although there is a great range of these too!). Something for everyone and packed full of flavour and nutrition, my favourite combination 🙂
Expresso Addiction – Henderson
Lombardi’s Cafe – 61 Brighams Creek Rd, Whenuapai, Auckland. Telephone: 09 416 4601
Porcini Cafe – Bistro & Pizzeria – 25 Commercial Road, Helensville
Fire and Ice Cafe – Waimauku Village
Barefoot in the Bay – 565-567 Blockhouse Bay Rd. Blockhouse Bay. Auckland
Taste Explosion Cafe – 21 Central Terrace
(Shop 4, Howick Village Mall), Howick.
Passion Cafe – Takapuna
Cottage Cafe – Browns Bay
The Library Cafe – Onehunga
Luscious – Onehunga- A range of gluten free salads in the cabinet available : *Potato & ham glazed with aioli – Lightly sauteed potatoes tossed in our own aioli dressing with spring onions and glazed diced ham off the bone. *Seasonal roasted vegetables with a Moroccan inspired home made mayo. *Luscious lentils and cashew nuts (Indian spices, Fragrant but not spicy). *Seasonal greens with almonds. *Mediterranean chicken coleslaw. *Roasted kumara with rocket and aioli. And also gluten free toast available if you order eggs benedict etc.
Cafe Tran – Onehunga – salads, risotto balls, stuffed kumara and a moist orange cake are the general gluten free staples at this cafe. And they have just started serving gluten free fish and chips with salad.
The Cake and Coffee Hut – Papakura.
Garrisons Pub – Sylvia Park – Awesome gluten free pizza, one of the best I’ve had. Unlike the gluten free pizza I tried at the Elephant Wrestler in Glenfield which I wouldn’t order again!
